2013 Annual General Meeting

(Left to right:) Yap Pau Ching, Tan Zhai Gen, Weiyang Tay and Shaun Kua form the 2013/14 Executive Committee of the Oxford University Malaysia Club.

The Oxford University Malaysia Club (OUMC) convened its Annual General Meeting this year on Saturday, May 11 at the Mary Ogilvie Lecture Theatre at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford. The outgoing committee, candidates and members of the Club were present at the event.

The meeting began with a farewell address by the outgoing President, Shivanand Sivamohan. In his speech, he reviewed the success of the year’s events, citing notable examples including the 20th Anniversary Dinner, Summer Speaker Series, the Tony Fernandes event, festive celebrations and the recent Oxbridge Malaysia Games. He thanked the members of the Club for their strong support and commitment, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the members of his committee – Wong Leong Khim (Vice President), Shaun Kua (Secretary), Tan Li Li (Treasurer), Goh Jun Wan (Welfare Officer), and Mohammad Firdaus Abdul Aziz (Postgraduate Officer). In closing, he wished the new committee the best of luck, stating “we have every confidence that you will take the Club to greater achievements and keep the Jalur Gemilang flying high in the city of dreaming spires.”

The outgoing Treasurer proceeded to give a brief account of the state of the Club’s finances. The Club is grateful to its sponsors this year – YTL Corporation, Celcom Axiata, and Mabecs.

The outgoing Vice President chaired the discussion and voting of amendments into the constitution. Lim Chern Yuen proposed to amend the permitted timeframe for holding the AGM. His amendment provides future committees with the flexibility of holding the AGM sometime between the fifth week of Hilary Term and the fourth week of Trinity Term inclusive, excluding the Easter vacation. Previously, the AGM had to be held in May.

Tan Zhai Gen proposed to amend how the Vice President is elected. The role of the Vice President has diverged significantly from that of the President over recent years, and it was found to be more beneficial for the Club if the Vice President were elected separately. Previously, the person elected to the office of Vice President was the presidential candidate with the second highest number of votes. Both amendments were unanimously passed during the meeting.

Wong Leong Khim and Wong Theen Yew, the Election Commission, chaired the rest of the meeting where the 2013/14 committee was elected. The results are as follows:

  • President: Shaun Kua, Law (Jurisprudence), Balliol College
  • Vice President: Weiyang Tay, Philosophy, Politics and Economics, The Queen’s College
  • Secretary: Tan Zhai Gen, Biochemistry, University College
  • Treasurer: Yap Pau Ching, Mathematics and Statistics, Exeter College
  • Welfare Officer: Fiona Tay, Mathematics, St Edmund Hall

The Club would like to congratulate the 2013/14 committee. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to a great and eventful year ahead.
