The Oxford-Cambridge Students Debate

On the 3rd of August 2013 at 9:30am in Sunway University, a debate on the motion “This house believes university education should be free” was held between debaters from the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. The debate was a collaboration between the Oxford University Malaysia Club (OUMC), Cambridge University Malaysian Society (CUMas) and the Oxford and Cambridge Society. Speakers from the University of Cambridge, who are Loo Han Rong, Shawn Tan and Ian Beh respectively debated on the proposition team while students from the University of Oxford, represented by Shivy Siva, Jish Lim and Halian Fadzli, were on the opposition. Tan Sri Lin See Yan, the President of the Harvard Club of Malaysia, was the Chief Adjudicator. Among the panel of judges were Ms Margaret Kaloo, founder and CEO of elc International School and Ms Ruma Lopes, Assistant Director, Pre-University Studies, Sunway College.

The lively debate saw both sides argued brilliant ideas for either side of the motion, and it was followed by an open session where the audience voiced out their opinions on the motion. The debate was eventually won by the proposition, while the best speaker was won by Loo Han Rong from University of Cambridge and Jish Lim from the University of Oxford.  A short sharing session was also done by both OUMC and CUMas representatives on their experiences studying in the respective universities. The whole session ended at about 12:30pm.
